An Iraqi Writes
Iraq

Published: 09-Jul-2003

Some of you may remember the diary from Iraq we ran written by an ordinary citizen living in Mosul. At the time we could not reveal his identity. But we can now tell you he's a doctor named Yahya and he's survived the war. We are now able to bring you extracts of his diary kept during the war.

The last few days of the war:

As the war was getting towards the end, the bombing became more vigorous.

They started to bomb even silly military bases. For example, there is an Iraqi military base a few hundred meters from my residence, which was hit several times.

One of these times was when I was coming back home from the hospital. I heard sirens, then the airplanes started to bomb.

A few seconds later a big explosion shook the earth, I began to run to my home and then window glass started to smash over my head. I really thought that this was my end.

I threw myself on the ground and covered my head and ears with my hands. Then I realised that I was still alive!

You can see in this first picture, just after the hill is the military base, which is now inhabited by Americans. Our houses are in front of the hill.

Another incident occurred at 4:00 am the next day. We were getting ready for the dawn prayer and that was when the most horrible bombing occurred, because it started without sirens.

The sound of a big explosion sheared the dawn silence; the whole house was shaking; a lot of windows broke and my brothers and sisters started to shout and cry.

We started to calm them down, but then we heard another missile getting closer and closer. We thought it was going to hit our house, then two seconds later there was a second explosion, which was much stronger than the first.

It smashed every small window, not just in our house but in the whole quarter. Thank God nobody was cut (as long as my family is concerned!).

In the morning, we found that the headquarters of the Doctors Society was severely damaged by 2 bombs.

Below you can find a picture taken of the headquarter ruins, and a mosque can be seen in the background, near the mosque is my home.

Yahya
