An Iraqi Writes
Iraq

Published: 07-Jul-2003

Some of you may remember the diary from Iraq we ran written by an ordinary citizen living in Mosul. At the time we could not reveal his identity. But we can now tell you he's a doctor named Yahya and he's survived the war. We are now able to bring you extracts of his diary kept during the war.

Is this war going to end?

So we have started another war, and it is not going to be a short one, that is what we thought on the first few days of war. Bombing, day and night, rain or sunny, even in the stormy days.

And by the way, I forgot to tell you that satellite TV receivers were forbidden in Saddam days.

The penalty was to pay $300, and 6 months in jail. During the war, the penalty was raised to execution! Is that believable? Do you think that a person deserve to die for having satellite receiver!

Anyhow, the only media we were having was the Iraqi national TV which was always broadcasting Saddam’s talks and songs about him. The radio at that time was very precious!

We used to listen to news from BBC, VOA and other radio stations. The news was 100% opposite to what we see on TV. Where is the truth? Nobody knew.

We started to suffer more during the war from the financial point of view. You remember the US dollar conversion ratio before the war? It was 1 US dollar for 2400 Iraqi Dinars, by the 2nd week of the war it reached 1 dollar for 4000 Iraqi Dinars...

We started to pray to God, to end this war by someway. Even if we lost the war, the situation would be better. Life became difficult; transportation was also difficult (a taxi driver takes my one month salary to carry me to the hospital, which is only 3Km far from my home).

It was a disaster. For us as doctors, we had to stay many days at the hospital, working for 24 hours a day, taking few hours rest at doctors' residence, and back to work again.
