Focus on forces in the Gulf
Iraq

The Ministry of Defence has put out official figures on the number of British troops killed in the war in Iraq.

The total number of casualties of war now looks like this:

  • Among coalition forces the Americans have sustained 13 deaths in combat, nine non-combat, including accidents or friendly fire.

  • British forces have sustained two deaths in combat, but 18 non-combat deaths.

  • Figures for Iraqi forces are much harder to ascertain but up to 400 have been killed.

  • Among civilians, Iraqi estimates say at least 175 have been killed so far and at least 11,000 injured.

  • There's a new website (see left) set up by relatives for relatives of those serving in the Gulf - with tales of fears, of support, and useful hints on how to cope. Sarah Lacey, whose boyfriend Lee is in the marines, said it has already become a vital resource.

Two more soldiers have been named - both killed by friendly fire on the outskirts of Basra, yesterday.

They are Corporal Stephen John Allbutt, from Stoke on Trent from the Queen's Royal Lancers, and Trooper David Jeffrey Clarke, from Littleworth in Staffordshire. Two other soldiers were seriously injured when one Challenger tank fired on another.

Today in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister was asked for assurance that families would receive all the support they need.

The 20 dead or missing believed killed by day seven is now nearly half way to the 47 total number who died in the 1991 Gulf War.
