Baghdad diary
Iraq

Published: 21-Mar-2003

Lindsey Hilsum, the Channel 4 News diplomatic correspondent, writes from Baghdad on what it's like there as war begins.

Last night's raid was short but it seems they knew what they were hitting.

Cruise missiles struck several buildings associated with Iraq's leadership including part of a palace complex. Still not a massive all-out assault expected, but an intense, targeted attack.

This morning at least one building was still smouldering - it was apparently used by the President's son Qusay and the Republican Guard which he heads.

The Iraqi government was showing its mettle this morning. The Interior Minister brandishing his cromed kalashniknov while his friend the Information Minister, he said, had a pistol.

They denied that American and British troops are now on Iraqi soil.

We went on a Ministry of Information bus trip. At Kindi hospital we met people who appeared to have been injured in the raids. One man said he'd been hurt in an explosion last night. His injury however wasn't severe.

Lindsey Hilsum:

"Will you describe medically what kind of injuries you've seen?"

Iraqi civilian:

"Yes, yes, cut muscles, cut arteries, fractures.. these are cases til now."

We were also taken to the Al Daura power station where several human shields are staying.

What the Iraqis want us to see are places that haven't been hit, people who haven't been hurt. It's to show how they're resisting the onslaught.

Now everywhere we go, we're taken around in buses, to make sure we see what the Iraqis want us to see.

The workers at the power plant gave us the normal show of loyalty. And the tea ladies joined in. Whatever is happening to the south, in Baghdad they know who's in charge.
