An Iraqi Writes
Iraq

Published: 06-Mar-2003

What is life really like inside of Iraq for the average citizen right now? We present diary extracts written by someone currently in Iraq.

"Everybody talks about the war. Will there be a war? How can the students study when their minds are full of news about the war? Will they study hard? Or will they just wait for the war and see what is going to happen because everything may change?

Would a postgraduate student continue his research concerning a new medicine being experimented on Guinea pigs, which need a very specific care and temperature? Or are all Guinea pigs going to die due to the electricity failure that is going to happen after the war?

All life here is in this stage of standing by. We are all waiting.

We suffered a lot during the 1991 war. The electricity went down for about 2 successive months! Some people have small generators, but these also are of limited use, due to the shortage of fuel. Water supply was also cut for 2 months, and so we must do our best to avoid similar sufferings."

And its not just shortages, that the Iraqis have to put up with. Basic communication with the outside world can be threatened by something that is merely an irritation in the UK.

"Email is an international service that is very important to us. It became recently possible for us to use it in Feb 2000. It’s been very good.

A few days ago, some of the silly Americans (as our ISP says), sent spam letters to us in Iraq. I have not received them, but some of the others have. They said that they contained something against the Iraqi policies.

What do they think is the benefit of these emails?! Aren't there any other types of media that they can use for that?"

Do you know that our email worsened after these emails!! i.e., our ISP delays the emails for the sake of check up!!!! Some emails take few days to reach us, others do not reach us even!?!?. F*** America. (Sorry).
