An Iraqi Writes
Iraq

Published: 27-Feb-2003

What is life really like inside of Iraq for the average citizen right now? We present diary extracts written by someone currently in Iraq.

I will start this by explaining how life looks like in Iraq, in this difficult time.

Life is so difficult from the financial point of view. Each US dollar here is worth 2400 Iraqi Dinars!

Knowing that each employee at any governmental institute receives not more than 10,000 Dinars as a salary (i.e. 4$) explains why life is difficult from the financial point of view.

Every single thing to buy here in Iraq depends on the dollar. Tomatoes get more expensive when the dollar value increases! In fact it is not the dollar value increasing, but the Iraqi Dinar value decreasing.

We are living a NIGHTMARE.

Imagine yourself waiting to see what would happen to you tomorrow? You would certainly say: I will wake up at ...then ..blah blah blah.

But for me, and every person living this tragic life, we can't anticipate the future, there are many projects in my mind waiting to be executed, but I am waiting to see what will happen to us first!

Whether we are going to enter a war? Lose our souls? Our houses? And many of our damn ideas?

Iraqi people are not the kind of people to fear bombs falling from a military aircraft, because this has become an ordinary thing in our life. Every day you hear alarms, bombs, airplanes etc.

What I am talking about is that the Iraqi people fear from the gloomy future of the country!

Is the food going to be enough? What water supply would we use if they hit water-filtering units of the town?

What electricity source are we going to depend on? Is the fuel is going to be enough for our car transportations and heating? Are Americans going to kill us?

That was just a sample of what we’re afraid of. People have started to store some food, especially canned and dry foods, also bottled water and batteries.

They have the experience from the Gulf War in 1991 that these things would be more precious than the gold!!!!

I think that they have every right to do so, they don't want to suffer the same misery they felt in 1991."
