Out This Week

30/07/2007

So the reign of Rihanna's 'Umbrella' is finally over. Timbaland snatched it off her and blew with all his mighty pop strength into it until it was all inside out and broken. Something that this week's role call of pop hopefuls will probably be quite happy about...

Laura Veirs 'Saltbreakers' (Nonesuch)
'Saltbreakers' has the dreamiest intro to any song we've heard this year. If treacle could play guitar, this is the riff it would come up with - gloriously gooey. Laura's crystal clear Colorado tones ride atop a slow loping groove and her band shout an infectious refrain from the back of the room as each instrument weaves deftly round the others. Every time we hear it, it feels like falling in love.
