Out This Week

30/07/2007

So the reign of Rihanna's 'Umbrella' is finally over. Timbaland snatched it off her and blew with all his mighty pop strength into it until it was all inside out and broken. Something that this week's role call of pop hopefuls will probably be quite happy about ...

Brinkman 'Change It' (His Master's Voice)
We can't help feeling that a lot of this 'new' music that seems to do very well in the charts and gets people like Fearne Cotton excited is starting to sound a lot like re-heated dad-rock. And therefore makes us want to reach for a gun. Take Brinkman, for example. Three young lads writing perky pop rock, slightly tainted by The Kinks or The Who yet lacking either of those bands' vitality, made more anodyne by modern production clarity and manly, uninteresting vocals. It's no surprise they're supporting Travis and Paul Weller on tour. Good grief. Did we fight in the electro wars for nothing?
