Out This Week

20/08/2007

So Kanye West waded in with his big inflatable bear and strong-armed nice little Robyn of the top of the chart this week, but can any of this week's hopefuls take on the tough new champ?

Calvin Harris 'Merrymaking At My Place' (Sony BMG)
This song, taken from Calvin's top ten album, 'I Created Disco', was originally about drugs. But you can't have songs about drugs on the radio because that might suggest that the people who played them approved of drugs. And they don't. Only Amy Winehouse, Pete Doherty and British home secretary Jacqui Smith take drugs and all three of them will go to hell. So they've changed the words. But not to "drinking squash", which we would've preferred. Anyway, 'Merrymaking' comes on like an answer record to LCD Soundsystem's 'Daft Punk Is Playing At My House' but is a bit too laidback - or not laidback enough - for a single. Blame it on the merrymaking.
