Out This Week
14/05/2007
Yep, it's pissing it down again, but that didn't stop another batch of records making it to the shelves. So which of this week's deluge had us singing in the rain and which had us running for cover...
Mutya 'Real Girl' (Universal)
Half-inching the backing track to Lenny Kravitz's 'It Ain't Over Till It's Over' while testily declaring her "real girl" credentials, Mutya delivers a slice of cute soulful pop. And the poutsome Mutya, (pronounced 'Moocher' in various circles) shows here that, away from bandmates of yore the Sugababes, she really was the more distinctive talent out of the three (or four... or five). This is, of course, a platform for Moocher's personal manifesto: 'I'm not a little girl', 'I never pretend to be something I'm not', she defiantly chirrups. Catchy pop perfection with a teensy two finger salute. The best kind, really.

The Cribs 'Men's Needs'
The video to this song was so raunchy it got banned.
Biffy Clyro 'Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies'
The Scottish rockers have gone all Flash Gordon on us.
Remi Nicole 'Fed Up' / 'Go With The Flow'
Where does she come on a scale of Kate Nash to Lily Allen?
Voxtrot 'Blood Red Blood'
Are indie guitars and orchestration a bit passé yet?
Maroon 5 'Makes Me Wonder'
Sunny Californian pop-funk with added frug agogo...
The Stills 'Destroyer'
It's actually much better than its ominous title suggests.
Wiley '50/50' / Bow E3'
The East London grime merchant makes us want to lie down, in a good way.
The Mitchell Brothers 'Sole Mate'
Mike Skinner's pals have fallen in love with, err, their daps.
Adjagas 'Lihkolas'
They may be 'yoik', but these Norwegians still make beautiful music...
