Single Of The Week
14/05/2007
Yep, it's pissing it down again, but that didn't stop another batch of records making it to the shelves. So which of this week's deluge had us singing in the rain and which had us running for cover...
Adjagas 'Lihkolas' (Ever Records)
Ever heard of a 'yoiker'? No, us neither, until the magical Adjagas came into our lives. A traditional 'yoik' band from Northern Norway, Adjagas bring a very important and musically fascinating tradition to light. And no, yoiking is not what you do when you come home after a particularly heavy evening's drinkage. It's a special kind of singing / chanting, displayed here to shimmering, almost ghostly effect by Sara Marielle Gaup and Lawra Somby. 'Lihkolas' may mean 'happiness', but this twinkling track has a melancholy edge, all lollopy vocals laced with gentle banjos and a fat drum sound. This has to be some of the most beautiful music around today.

Mutya 'Real Girl'
Former Sugababe delivers a musical two-fingered salute.
The Cribs 'Men's Needs'
The video to this song was so raunchy it got banned.
Biffy Clyro 'Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies'
The Scottish rockers have gone all Flash Gordon on us.
Remi Nicole 'Fed Up' / 'Go With The Flow'
Where does she come on a scale of Kate Nash to Lily Allen?
Voxtrot 'Blood Red Blood'
Are indie guitars and orchestration a bit passé yet?
Maroon 5 'Makes Me Wonder'
Sunny Californian pop-funk with added frug agogo...
The Stills 'Destroyer'
It's actually much better than its ominous title suggests.
Wiley '50/50' / Bow E3'
The East London grime merchant makes us want to lie down, in a good way.
The Mitchell Brothers 'Sole Mate'
Mike Skinner's pals have fallen in love with, err, their daps.
