'Place him in a pigeon-hole and he will strut out of it like an arrogant peacock¿'
Fans of Ike Robinson feel not only that the precocious singer and guitarist has the answer, but he actually is the answer. 'London's answer to Jack White,' offers one; 'The male population¿s response to Lily Allen,' muses another.
His daddy played guitar, so Ike played from infancy, forming his first school band with life-long friend and now-successful jazz songstress Polly Gibbons when they were both just 12-years-old.
Ike's teen years were spent getting good grades, working rubbish jobs and indulging impulses in his small market hometown in Suffolk. In 2005 Ike was blessed with a twist of fate in the shape of a job offer, so he tied up his belongings in a tea-towel on the end of a stick, and headed for the Capital.
The London move cleared a path towards a great pool of musical collaborations and before long Ike was working with producers DJ Precise and Olson (from Wall of Sound outfit Vinyl Dialect and also of Plagiawrists fame) forming their first band together, funk outfit Herschel Road. While the group triumphed on their debut at Sketch in Mayfair, Ike soon became distracted and started work on a slightly angrier solo EP ' 'me! me! ME!' Admittedly borne out of and possibly even glamourising his wayward lifestyle, this EP seeks to offer the listener honesty. With witty lyrics, catchy hooks, and frequent unexpected tempo changes, the songs sound as if two different pop tracks were decisively welded together to double your interest. Catch a listen, and if Ike is on the loose within a million miles of you one night, do pop along! But be careful not to catch fire. |
