More than half of fans paid nothing for Radiohead album
07/11/2007
So how did music fans react to Radiohead's honour system over paying for their latest album, 'In Rainbows'? Not very honourably: over 60 percent paid nothing at all.
Of the 38 percent who did pay, most parted with less than £2 and only four percent paid more than £6, close to the price of regular download albums, according to internet research firm comScore.
However, at an average of about £3 ($6) an album, the band could still be quids in.
"If Radiohead are getting $6 on average, and it's basically going straight into their pockets and their costs are minimal, it could be economically viable," said comScore analyst Andrew Lipsman to E! Online.
The Oxford band made history last month when they became the first major band to shun a conventional record label and allow fans to decide how much they were willing to pay to download an album.
