Tony Wilson, the founder of Factory Records, died last Friday aged 57.
Wilson, who began his career as a reporter for Granada TV, is credited with breaking Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays and setting up legendary club The Haçienda, all of which helped establish Manchester as a musical centre to rival London.
The entrepreneur and broadcaster, who was being treated for kidney cancer, died of a heart attack with his family around him at Christie Hospital in Manchester.
"New Order wouldn't have came to be what they are without Tony and the Factory Records label because he was very passionate about music and he believed the band should have total freedom," said Stephen Morris, drummer with Joy Division and later New Order, to the BBC.
