Estelle
Interview

"Shiny new knickers"

West London's very own Estelle gave us goose pimples the first time we heard her debut album, 'The 18th Day', way back in 2004, but then she whooshed off to America and that was the last we heard from her.

But now she's back, properly back, and on John Legend's Homeschool Records with a fantastic new single, 'American Boy' that's slayed the mighty Duffy by going straight in at number one. So we caught up with her to talk about all that - and about shiny pants.

Hello, Estelle. Can you fill in the blanks and tell us what you've been doing these past three years?

I've been living! I've been growing up. I've been getting in with a new record label. I've been getting rid of crazy people. And I've been working with crazy producers that I never thought I'd work with - like Mark Ronson, Wyclef, Cee-Lo, will.i.am, Swizz Beatz. It's surreal when you think of it but when I'm doing my stuff I think, "There's no time for me to think like that, I've got to get this sh*t done!"

What illustrious Christmas cards you'll have this year. And now you and Kanye are sitting pretty at the top of the charts?

'American Boys' is one crazy song. It's about meeting American boys and falling in love and being infatuated and wanting to visit America. It's like 'Love Actually' where the guy from 'My Family' says, "I have to go to America, I'm going to meet American girls." So this is like the girl version.

And what are American boys like?

Well I went out with one for two years so I have a lot of experience and they're just the same as British guys. The only thing is that you get what you see with British guys. No games, no extra talking. And American guys are like, "Hey mama, how's it going? I was just sitting over there..." It's amazing, they are hilarious. They've got so much game that it goes past the point of being for real and then when you get into a relationship, they're just the same. I've got a whole batch of new songs to write about it and they're all crazy. The remix to 'American Boys' might just be 'They're Just The Same As British Boys'. Or even 'They Are All The Bloody Same!'.

Even though you've been around for ages, Rolling Stone magazine has tipped you as one of the brightest new things to look out for in 2008.

It's mental right! I'm brand new for some people you know. I'm happy about that, so that's cool. Please make me top ten all day every day!

Could well happen. You're number one right now but who or what do you tip for the top?

I really like a new guy called Ghetto, he reminds me of Busta Rhymes. He's got that fire. Ooh, and I'm into these shiny new knickers from Urban Outfitters.

Go on...

Well I went in there and nearly had a heart attack. They had some sparkly knickers - some black or gold sequined sparkly knickers. I must get some. I don't need them, I won't wear them, but I have to have them! I'm going to hang them on my wall. But do you know what you do? You wear them with a really short skirt so if you ever get a flash, it's a sparkle. So it would never be a Lohan or Spears flash. Oh no, if people think that's going to happen to me, they'll get something else. A sea of sequins. They're the sh*t!

We can imagine. Thank you, Estelle!
