Coming in our ears and filling us with joy
18/10/2005

Readers, welcome back to our Playlist. It's where we share with you those special records that have been making friends with us this week. So without further ado...
HEAVY DEVIANCE ‘A Slow Walk Down The Stairs’ (Mint album)
We tried to pick the best track from this record but couldn’t. They’re all quite wonderful. Funky, dubby dance music with sophisticated samples, nerve-soothing vocals and beautiful production. Warming our cockles up a treat.
KELLY CLARKSON ‘Because of You’ (Sony BMG album track)
Quite simply, the biggest bloody ballad since Bonnie Tyler went to that weird school where the kids had mirrors for eyes.
UTADA ‘Easy Breezy’ (Universal album track)
She’s one of the biggest pop stars in the world, she’s Slashmusic’s new best friend and this sounds like Shakira meets Gwen meets Madonna and features the word “Japanesey”. A hit or we’ll eat your hat, the nice one with the big brim.
GIRLS ALOUD ‘Biology’ (Polydor single)
After the disappointment that was ‘Long Hot Summer’, our favourite girls return with an absolute corker. Loud, brash and with a chorus catchier than bird flu, this will return the girls back to their rightful top spot. Hurrah!
MY MORNING JACKET ‘Wordless Chorus’ (Sony BMG album track)
Any band that counts among its number someone called Two Tone Tommy can’t be all bad. This album will break the Louisville band in the UK, or we’ll eat, er, your other hat.
And also being considered for greatness are...
AFX ‘Laughable Butane Bob’ (Warp album track)
BOB DYLAN ‘Tell Ol’ Bill’ (from the ‘North Country’ soundtrack/Sony)
THE CARDIGANS ‘Don’t Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds)’ (Universal album track)
CLOR ‘Danger Zone (Acid Workout)’ (Regal B-side)
DAFT PUNK ‘Human After All’ (Virgin single)
DEAR ESKIMO ‘Be Patient’ (Key single)
GHOSTFACE ‘Be Easy’ (Def Jam single)
HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT ‘Joy Division Oven Gloves’ (Probe Plus album track)
HARD FI ‘Move On Now’ (Atlantic/Necessary Records Album Track)
HAYLEY HUTCHINSON ‘Here’s The Love’ (Gut Records Album Track)
KATE BUSH ‘King Of The Mountain’ (EMI single)
LIBERTY X ‘It’s OK’ (Virgin album track)
LONGVIEW ‘Will You Wait Here’ (14th Floor album track)
MADONNA ‘Hung Up’ (WEA single)
NIXON AND THE BURN ‘Ghost In The Phone’ (Unsigned)
SIRENS ‘Love Hurts’ (Kitchenware single)
THE STROKES ‘Juicebox’ (Rough Trade single)
SUGABABES ‘Ace Reject’ (Island album track)
TINA COUSINS ‘Wonderful Life’ (Big single)
TONI BRAXTON ‘Take This Ring’ (Blackground album track)
THE WINTER KIDS ‘I’m Not Used to You’ (Unsigned)

Can you tell who it is yet?
17/10/2005

We've just heard the ▄▄▄▄ ▄▄▄▄ album, only we're not allowed to talk about it yet.
We can tell you that it's definitely ▄▄▄▄ and a complete ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄. And well worth the ▄▄▄▄.
Our favourite ▄▄▄▄ are ▄▄▄▄ and ▄▄ ▄▄▄▄▄▄ and the bit where the ▄▄ ▄▄▄▄ is brilliant.
And it's got bloody ▄▄ ▄▄▄▄ on it! Amazing!
Come back on October 23 and we'll fill in the ▄▄▄▄s.

Filmsta
14/10/2005

'Get Rich Or Die Tryin' is a new Hollywood movie about an inner city drug dealer who turns to rap music to escape his surroundings.
Why are we telling you about it?
Well, it stars Penelope Keith 50 Cent who, himself, is no stranger to the wrong side of the tracks or rapping for that matter. He also released a rather successful album that was also called 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. Why, it's almost as if the part was written for him!
The film isn't released in the UK until January, but we have the trailer for you to watch. Brilliant!
Click here and watch the trailer for 50 Cent's film 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin'.
And remember, 50 Cent is used to being shot - you are not. Don't get shot.

Pocket TV has finally arrived!
13/10/2005

Apple grabbed the world's attention again today when it ran a series of big-potatoes parties to launch its all-new video iPod.
The new gadget is smaller and lighter than before, plays music (no!) and lets you carry video clips around with you to watch when you’re on the bus / plane / lavatory. What's more, it won’t set you back more than it did before. Amazing!
In the States, users are already buying shows ‘Lost’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’ (both available on Channel 4, telly buffs) to watch on their iPod, or any iTunes-equipped computer.
In the UK we have to get by on a diet of music videos and short Pixar movies, while British TV people figure out which shows to sell, and how to make them ready for iTunes. (Hint: You need QuickTime Pro and Flip4Mac - now do it!)
By the way, Apple also released a new, slimline iMac - with a dead easy-to-use remote control that lets you look at pictures, listen to music and watch videos and DVDs, as well as all the usual computer stuff.
So what?
This is a big deal! It means there’s a legal way to distribute movies - so it’s only a matter of time before TV stations effectively become video podcasters.
What’s podcasting? Just think TV and radio on demand, where, when and how you want it - you never need to miss 'Rock School' or 'Wife Swap' again.
No lesser industry bod than Disney boss Bob Iger said: "This is the future as far as Disney is concerned. This is the start of something really big."
You said it, mouse-man.

Keep 'em Peel'd
12/10/2005

It’s John Peel day on Thursday. Not a time for being sad but a time for filling your ears with as much innovative pop music as is physically possible.
There’s all manner of commemorative communion planned to honour the nation's best loved DJ and we have compiled a brief guide to some of the ways you could take part.
Then again, you could always drink a bottle of red wine and play your favourite records at the wrong speed. To be honest, it's all good...

Just the taTu of us
07/10/2005

The new taTu album is here!
taTu’s new album ‘Dangerous and Moving’ is out today, a fact which might make you want to go to the shops and stuff.
But, buying things can be so tiresome what with all that wandering about and exchanging-hard-earned-for-goods-caper etcetc.
So, we thought, how about we let people have a good old listen to the new waxing by those kinky Russian fake lesbo pop superstars for nothing!
Nish! So we sorted it because we care.
And, after you've listened, you could enjoy this strange marvel.
Huzz-unk!

Blog party - again!
05/10/2005

Our new best pal is Matt from Bloc Party.
He called us from Glasgow to bang on about all kinds of hilarious stuff, and the full interview is on what scientists call the 'internet' right here!
But as a 'taster', here is what he thinks of the new Franz Ferdinand album:
"It’s not as good as the first one."
There, as they say, you have it!
Now go read about their wacky japes involving mouthwash and whoopee cushions...

Ladyphone
05/10/2005

Pop stars are always phoning us up. Seriously, they are. They pretend they just want a natter, but really, they're waiting for an opportunity to plug their latest single, album, self-serving charity parachute jump.
Whatever, we know their game.
So when Ruben Wu of Ladytron called us to 'have a chat', we figured we'd time him and see how long it took for the social niceties to break down and the hard selling take over.
Here's how he got on...

Dirty television hilarity
03/10/2005

This Thursday - October 6, date fans - Channel 4 will, as part of their 'Sexology' series, be showing Dirty Fan Male, which exposes the hilarious, strange, disturbing - and very British - world of the porn fan letter writer.
Jonny Trunk, the man behind the incredible Trunk Records, collected hundreds of truly bizarre letters while working in the porn industry.
Then he and his friend Wiseby turned them into a live show, a t-shirt, a CD, a book and now a TV show.
Clever, clever bastards.
You'll see nothing funnier this year. We promise.

Rock and drôle - UPDATE!
30/09/2005

OMG! LOL! And all that other stuff! We went to interview Gene Simmons and, who'da thunk it, he turned out to be the most entertaining bloke ever!
The whole caboodle will be online next week, but until then, ponder on these forthcoming treats:
1. The bit where Gene makes a 'dinosaur' shape with his hands and starts emitting odd sniffing noises.
2. His use of the word 'mount' when talking about telly lovelies.
3. The way he keeps his partially-used chewing gum stored on top of his mobile phone!
4. His considered opinion of Keane: "Keane are great, but they'll never make it in the States because the singer guy looks gay..."
5. The bit where he first sets eyes on BB6 bottle jockey Kinga and demands a date IMMEDIATELY*.
Oh and loads of other stuff. And that's official.
*We've just heard that the date might be happening tonight!

Rock and drôle
30/09/2005

We're off to interview Gene Simmons in a bit. He's out of that band Kiss, you know, the ones with the make up and stuff. We used to go to school with a straw-haired tubby boy who loved them. We've not seen him for years.
Anyway, 'Rock God' Gene, a man as famous for his love of a good marketing opportunity as much as his love of an arena-rattling pop-rock anthem, is the star of the very hilarious 'Rock School', which starts tonight. Actually, we're not sure about the 'Rock God' bit, we think he's a bit more like Donald Trump in a leather flasher's mac, but we're still cancelling all our appointments so we don't miss a second of it.
More news on what he's actually like later...
