Friday
Robyn must be very pleased that literally tens of people have taken the afternoon off work to see her play at Wireless. So pleased that she's hired out not one but two drummers to bash out the not really hits here to the audience. 'Who's That Girl' sees the bomber jacket-bound songstress whip out a stick and bash a big drum (making her the third drummer on stage!) while 'Handle Me' has her gaining nods of approval from the growing number of gig goers as she reels off biting insults to the song's bad boy lover. Then Robyn pulls the pop rabbit out of the hat with uplifting soon to be single 'With Every Heartbeat', of which the 'heartbeat' of the song title is emphasised with Robyn beating her fist on her chest. Beautiful. Thank you, Robyn. Even though the clouds are circling above the stage and the pricey festival falafels are feeling like razors in our tummies, we can't help but smile when North London rapper Just Jack bounces on. Has anyone ever seen Jack without a smile on his face? We doubt it. As the first jangles of 'Starz In Their Eyes' are thrashed out, those who got out of work early prove they all know the words to this one and don't mind making them known. Good on them and good on Jack. We see Maxi Jazz from Faithless walking around. He is really very slim. Like Flat Stanley. A bit of croony lift music introduces Kelis. Maybe it was to make opening song sound even better in comparison. She shouldn't worry though, 'Millionaire' sounds wonderful. It was just a shame that Nas's missus doesn't seem to think so herself. Maybe she was distracted by the bungee jumps and fairground rides, but Kelis in her yellow tutu doesn't look very interested. Thankfully this ennui doesn't last for too long and soon Kelis is pumping out 'Keep It Down', the bassline of which pounds through London's Hyde Park. But what the people really want is to shake their wotsits to 'Milkshake' and 'Trick Me', so it's a good job she bashes them out now. Hooray! Everyone's favourite producer turned artiste de jour, Mark Ronson draws whoops of joy from the crowd as he walks on to a bold, brassy jazz up of Coldplay's 'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face'. Then the musical jack of all pop trades straps on his guitar and strums out 'Toxic' with Daniel Merriweather (him off 'Stop Me') to even more rapturous applause. Bravo chaps. And bravo chappesses, especially the lovely-voiced lady who wasn't Lily Allen but sang 'Oh My God' just as nicely. Onwards to the XFM stage to catch the end of Badly Drawn Boy's set. "Some of you people may have bought a Hoover or a washing machine because of this song, for that I am sorry," says BDB before launching into Currys ad song 'All Possibilities'. We don't feel at all brainwashed. Although, come to think of it, we could do with a new toaster... It's hard to believe that so many people have pored out on to Hyde Park to see a 50-year-old man rave (he turns 50 this week). But they have! And this is no ordinary ageing raver (Tracey Big Brother take note), this is peace-loving house music legend Maxi Jazz and his revered group Faithless. And they don't mess around. Faithless get straight to the point and whip out ageless classic 'Insomnia'. And do you know what? If they can't get no sleep, they might as well do what they do best and play Really Good Dance Music. We don't know how they'll follow 'Insomnia'. But bass rollicking recent stomper 'Mass Destruction' is a good start and helps keep even the most wearisome Wireless bodies dancing. Result. Well done, Faithless. Good night from Wireless day two.
