... One Self!
The people have spoken, and the words they said were: "You know what? We're loving One Self and their amazingly cool hip-hop 'n' songs 'n' tunes gear. They, in a very real way, are our champions!"
And, what's more, we agree 100%. One Self entered the Slashmusic Showcase as mere minnows in the world of huge, gnawing pop sharks.
Now, just a few short months later, they're like proud beasts, their eyes and plumage shining with well-deserved glory. They are colossi!
And what do these colossi win? Why, a slot on the none-more-amazing Slashmusic TV show which is coming to your homes via the modern miracle of the ariel and the telly. More specifically, it will be shown on 4Music and T4 in November, and One Self will be in the opening show!
That's what. But what can you expect to see on said telly programme?
Well, something very much like this.
One Self are DJ Vadim and MCs Blu Rum13, a New Yorker, and Yarah Bravo (Chilean mum, Brazilian dad, raised in Sweden). They have been working together since 2003, but it was Vad's 2004 move from Kingston in Surrey to London's East Ham that inspired their album.
"It's such a cultural hot-pot that it makes sense that I'd put it into the music somehow," Vad said recently. "There's sitars and the whole Indian thing, but also there's African sounds, flamenco guitar, Shakuhachi flute – it's a real blend of all the sounds and the people of the area we live in."
"It is a hip hop album," he continues, "but also a very musical album."
Ladies and gentlemen: your winners! One Self!
