Why she writes songs...
I write songs because...I don't know, I just write them. They just come out of nowhere. I just get possessed. I think it's just a way for me to understand the world. When I write a song I understand what I just went through a bit better. Even if consciously I have no idea what's going on, the song will tell me a little of what's going on.
What she's like in the morning ...
When I wake up in the morning I usually, you know, try to get my daughter out of bed and try to get dressed, brush our teeth and eat our breakfast. I'm more of a night person, more nocturnal. I come to life after 5pm. Before 5pm I can be a bit of a grump. All the songs on the album were recorded after midnight so maybe it was good for me you know. I'm more creative at night. My dream in life is to become a morning person. Maybe I can be like Leonard Cohen, I think like he wakes up at 3am, stays up until 9 and then gets up at 3am or something like that.
What she wishes she was better at ...
I wish I was better at mathematics. I'm really horrible with numbers like even when I'm doing a tip in a restaurant, it takes me about two minutes to do the addition of the total tip.
The last time she wanted to punch someone ...
The last time I wanted to punch somebody was... Actually, I did some promo photography - and I'm not a violent person - but there was some air brushing done and it's not the label's fault because they send it to a third party but whoever's been doing this airbrushing has gone totally mad. They make everyone look like aliens now. I saw it and they fixed my nose which I didn't realise had flaws before. I kind of wanted to punch them. What do you mean my nose is crooked! It was funny.
What she'd tell the 16 year old her ...
If I could tell the 16 year old me something... Actually I was pretty good when I was 16. I was really involved in extra curricular activities at my school and I was really ambitious, I guess. But I would tell her that's it's all going to be fine.
Something no-one knows about her ...
I make a really good Kale soup, a Portuguese soup. Kale soup: collared greens, potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic and a secret sauce which is the Portuguese recipe. We make this sauce twice a year. We buy fresh red hot peppers, we crush it and add vinegar and salt then we put it in mason jars and put it away. Then we put it in everything like chicken soup, casserole and then people come over and think you're a really good cook but really it's just my Aunt's secret sauce. You just have it in the fridge like Shake 'N' Bake!
