Duffy

Growing up in the isolated Llyn Peninsula, North Wales, Duffy (real pop stars only need one name) has a biography that reads like the plot of a movie: young girl with a voice like a sixties starlet desperate to get out of her small town and be a famous singer but no clue how to do it is rescued from a life of unfulfilled dreams by Richard Parfitt, formerly of the band 60 Ft Dolls. He introduces her to Rough Trade Records, who team her up with ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and together they make a shimmering and soul-drenched debut single called 'Rockferry' - which has pretty much everyone declaring Duffy to be music's brightest hope for 2008.
Now, if this really was a movie there'd also be a faithful dog, a stolen suitcase and a subplot involving terrorists and dinosaur eggs. But, you know, anything could happen in the next twelve months...
