51 Birch Street
Documentary about a son who makes the painful discovery that his parents' 54-year marriage was nothing like he imagined it to be.
Filmmaker Doug Block thought he was recording his family for posterity, but when his mother dies suddenly and his 83-year-old father marries his former secretary almost immediately, the filming takes a new direction.
Block starts to discover that his parents' 54-year marriage was not all it had seemed to be. Had his father been unfaithful? Should he read his dead mother's secret diaries? Does any of it make any difference now? Is finding out about his parents and filming it all just a selfish act that he is using as therapy?
The questions 51 Birch Street asks are universal, fundamental and cross-generational. How much about your parents do you really want to know?
"When it comes to your parents, I can't help thinking – maybe ignorance is bliss," Block says.
