India's child labour ban
Tue 10 Oct 2006
We examines how India has introduced a new ban on child labour in restaurants, hotels and resorts that comes into effect today.
Up to twenty million children could be affected by the Indian government's ban today on child labour.
The new law will mean that children under 14 are no longer allowed to work as domestic help or in cafes and restaurants.
But implementation of the ban could be a Herculean task. In a country where child labour can provide up to thirty percent of some household incomes and, where there is no state welfare provision - many Indians do not see hiring children from poor families as a crime. Judy Aslett reports.
