Oona King

Oona King guest-hosted the show Mon 21 to Thurs 24 Nov 2005.

Oona King was born in 1967 in Sheffield, although was brought up in Camden.

She gained a first in BA Politics at York University, and was also awarded a scholarship to spend a year studying at Berkeley University, California.

In 1990, she worked as a Researcher for the Socialist Group of the European Parliament, and then worked for Glyn Ford MEP (1991-3). Following that she worked for Glenys Kinnock MEP (1994-5), and then as a trade union officer for the GMB (1995-97) representing low-paid workers in the public sector.

Oona was elected as MP for Bethnal Green and Bow in May 1997.

She campaigned on issues including anti-social behaviour, domestic violence, housing, fair rents, pensioner rights, immigration, electoral reform, inner city regeneration, comprehensive education, Europe, and a fairer international trade system. In May 2005, she lost her seat to Respect leader, and ex-Labour MP, George Galloway.
