True Voice of Prostitution
First on More4 April 2006. Rpt C4 Tues 26 Feb 11.05pm.
A series of hard-hitting monologues performed by actors using the words of real people.
One of the films in True Voice of Prostitution features Richard Wilson as Derek, an immaculately turned-out and highly successful businessman in his 60s. He has been seeing high-class escorts and prostitutes for over 15 years with full knowledge of his wife. He speaks about his personal sexual preferences and tastes in the same contractual manner he discusses his successful career as a property developer.
Grace is the tragic tale of a Ugandan girl, played by Nikki Amuka-Bird, who came to the UK after seeing her parents murdered. She is brought to London by a family friend who disappears, leaving her in a flat with two men. On the point of being abused, she runs away and ends up living on the streets of London. Though still a child, she turns to prostitution to survive.
In another of the films, we meet a high-class escort played by Lesley Sharp who used to make up to £1,000 per evening. She has worked in the business for 15 years, after starting off as a glamour model, but notes, with some resignation, that getting older is not entirely good for one's career.
