Dave Gorman

Dave Gorman in America Unchained

Dave Gorman goes in search of the independent America of 1970s TV by driving coast to coast in an ancient Ford.

Comedian, writer and broadcaster Dave Gorman has always been a man with a plan. It all started in 2001 when, after a drunken bet, he scoured the globe looking for 54 more Dave Gormans – one for every card in the pack (including jokers) – and created the cult show Are You Dave Gorman?

This time he's looking for the real America, the one on TV in his youth, the homegrown of the Dukes of Hazzard, Smokey and the Bandit, and CHiPs.

The plan
Gorman's plan is to buy a car and drive the classic 3,000 miles from Los Angeles to New York City. There is no other plan, except for while he's doing that, he's not going to give any money to 'The Man' – the multinationals, the chains, the brands, the trademarks. He only wants to give his money to 'Mom and Pop – the independent garages and local stores. Is it still possible?

Could you drive from Land's End to John o' Groats and only fill your car up from independent garages?
