Walking

Walking
At around 3.5 million years old, it's the original mode of transport. Walking is free and most of us can cover two miles in around 35 minutes. One in four car journeys is under two miles long, contributing to congestion and pollution. Let's face it there is no greater sense of satisfaction than to casually stroll past the hoard of traffic backed up behind roadworks.

Top Tips
  • Do take a map. If you don't need it yourself, you can at least assist lost plodders.
  • Do think about a change of shoes to ensure that you don't turn up at the office crippled with blisters (especially those walking a 1 mile plus route).
  • Do keep a packet of plasters with you just in case.
  • Parents, do organise walk-to-school parties. Leave the 4x4 at home and walk just like in the old days. It's far healthier for the kids. All it takes is a keen individual or two, an email or phone group, a meeting place and parents to share the task of escorting the group safely to school. The kids could even calculate the saved carbon dioxide emissions as part of a school project.
  • Do get a pedometer. They're cheap and you'll feel great knowing exactly how far you've walked in a day.
