Fruit & Veg

fruit and veg
Many food suppliers are now labelling their fruit and veg to let you know where it came from. The rationale for this is to give consumers a choice about buying produce that has been shipped halfway around the world or that which has been locally grown.

Ostensibly it may seem like a good thing to buy locally since it won’t contribute to the emissions produced from flying food vast distances. But for the boycotters out there it’s worth considering that growing stuff all year round in colder climates like Europe also comes at an environmental cost in the form of large amounts of energy spent heating the necessary greenhouses. Also, encouraging trade with developing nations can be a really effective way in helping such nations claw their way out of poverty.
