Electricity

wind power
Running an average household burns up a tonne of carbon roughly every 60 days. Electricity currently accounts for 30% of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions, so if you want to reduce your own contribution then you may want to start at home. Several electricity suppliers now advertise that they use renewables in their electricity production, but the best way to be sure is to opt for one that only uses renewables.

Ecotricity claims to be the first in the world to do this. By only supplying electricity generated using wind farms and solar panels, the company says you can reduce your household’s carbon footprint by 6 tonnes a year. For every pound its customers spend, the company says it spends the same amount building new wind parks. This year alone it has invested £25 million in new wind turbines, enough to supply 24,000 homes.

Other companies like E.On are also planning on building 83 wind turbines in the coming years, which would be capable of generating 300 megawatts of green electricity, enough to supply 200,000 homes.

But while this is a good start it still only represents a fraction of the market. A few months ago the UK announced it would be investing in wind energy, despite complaints by naysayers who find them an eyesore. If you want this trend to continue the best thing you can do is sign up.
