Say it with Chemicals

Earlier in 2007 International Development Secretary Hilary Benn urged consumers to buy flowers from developing nations such as Kenya.

Besides helping developing economies there is also an environmental rationale for doing this. A study released earlier this year revealed that even though flowers grown in Africa contribute to emission through air travel they still burn less carbon that those grown in European hothouses.

The flip side of this is that Kenyan workers are now suffering the consequences as pesticide residues find their way in to water supplies. An alternative is to try to buy locally grown flowers which currently only make up about 10 per cent of the UK market. Even better though is to grow your own. That way you can ensure that the flowers aren’t grown using pesticides. For there has been growing concern that flowers reaching consumers are still rich with pesticide residues. Florists have reported a range of skin complaints that have been linked to this.
