According to the calculations of American writer and cultural forecaster Jamais Cascio, the average carbon footprint of a burger is roughly 3 kilogrammes. This takes into account the entire journey of a burger and all its ingredients, from farming the cattle, growing their feed, transporting the meat and of course flame grilling it.

Although 3 kilogrammes of carbon is still several times the weight of the burger itself, to some people it may seem pretty low and quite reasonable. But when you consider how many of these are consumed you get a different picture.
