For many people, solar power (also known as photovoltaics) is the ultimate green fuel – abundant, clean emission-free energy for all. But, while technology has made great progress in recent years, solar energy is still expensive especially when compared to alternative conventional and renewable energy sources. All this is about to change. BASF has teamed up with Bosch to develop organic photovoltaics (OPVs): solar cells based on organic materials that generate electricity from sunlight. The advantage of organic over inorganic solar cells is that they are as flexible and thin as plastic film, which will help to make organic solar cells more efficient and cost effective in the long term. So what does this all mean for you and me? Organic solar cells will pave the way for sustainable energy production and make solar power cheaper and more competitive. This means they could one day be used as environmentally friendly sources of energy on roofs, windows, TV screens, computer screens, mobile phones... Alongside organic solar cells, BASF is launching a range of cutting edge ideas and products.
