Was there any wildlife on site?
There were birds everywhere (this is unusual for a landfill site in this country – many sites hire falconers to try and chase scavenging birds off). As well as the expected crows and seagulls, there were many other species.
In fact, part of the site is a nationally recognised conservation area and has a surprising amount to offer birdwatchers, including ringed plover, little ringed plover, snipe and terns. Fortunately for the group, the huge landfill next to their dump seemed to keep the birds fairly well fed and at no point was their own shelter raided.
Despite numerous rumours, none of the group could offer definitive proof that they had any encounters with rats. There were several families of foxes living around the site, and some of them even came on to the dump at night to scavenge around the living area.
There is also a closely monitored community of bats in the area and the bats could be seen flying around the dump in the evening time. One of the group did find a dead rotting snake on the dump, believed to have been thrown out in someone's household rubbish.
