Shit Stirring Anyone?

Watch Video: Stirring the compost loo brings Jermaine and Selena closer together >

News: Shit stirringThe composting toilet has been an undeniable success but there's one job everyone wants to avoid - stirring the shit.

As the compost barrel gets fuller it is important that air is able to circulate to assist the process of waste breaking down. The only way to do this is to get a great big stick, take a very deep breath, open the barrel and give the contents a good old stir.

This isn't one of the better jobs on the dump. Luckily it only has to be done every few days. As Jarvis did it last time he is exempt this time and gets to decide how the next stirrer will be selected.

Jermaine and Selena battle it out

He hits upon a novel idea - a tournament of scissors, paper, stone. And in a bizarre twist of fate the final is contested between arch foes Jermaine and Selena. There's still an atmosphere between them following two explosive rows yesterday.

Never before had so much rested on the outcome of one game of scissors, paper, stone. Jermaine goes for paper. Selena goes for stone. Selena loses. The stick is hers, the compost awaits. But as Selena makes her way over to the barrel, Jermaine thinks now is the time to bury the hatchet.

'I think I should take this opportunity to at least help her with proceedings,' Jermaine offers gallantly. 'You don't have to do that,' Selena counters, aware that she lost the tournament fair and square. But Jermaine won't be put off: 'You do half and I'll do half.' 'That's very gentlemanly of you, thank you Jermaine,' Selena responds, genuinely surprised and happy.

Perhaps an indication of what two and a half weeks of living on a dump can do to ordinary people, by the end Selena and Jermaine appear to be having a whale of a time stirring a bucket of human waste.

All's well that ends well

The tense mood on the dump has evaporated. Selena says: 'I am really impressed. So I think I can forgive his behaviour as long as he carries on the way that he's doing because that was a really nice gesture.' And Jermaine sums it up: 'It's been hard work but to be fair I think the shit stirrings brought us together.'
