From Shanty Town to Eco Village

The group have now been living on the dump for over a week in the temporary tent-like structure which they built on the second day. Some members of the group are not happy with their living conditions. Jason says: 'We've been in this tent around eight days now and it's starting to whiff a bit. It's actually beginning to smell worse in here than it does out on the dump. There's a prevailing sense of sweat and dust and flies are starting to gather.'
Eco-design expert Rob Holdway gets the group together to talk about this. He praises them for their hard work so far, but points out that they're still in survival mode. It's time for a bit of luxury. So the group begin to concentrate their efforts on turning their shanty town into an eco-village!
Ian's patience is wearing thin
Ian has been trying to persuade the rest of the group that they should be building a much better shelter for themselves, but so far he's had very little help from the rest of the group, Sitting on his own working on the timber frame he's put together, Ian's patience is wearing very thin: 'I have asked for help. Some people are asleep, others have blatantly said that they are having a chilled out afternoon and not doing anything. This is a joke man, this is horrendous,' he seethes.
Is Jason's shower really what it seems?
Jason is trying to help. A few days ago Rob set the group the challenge of building a solar-heated shower to try and replace the hot water tap. Jason threw himself into the project with gusto and confidently predicts that his system will produce plenty of hot water in a totally green fashion. Sure enough, when he and Jarvis test it, there is a flow of lovely warm water. 'It's hot enough to bath a baby!' is Jarvis' verdict.
But is Jason's solar shower as green as it seems? On closer inspection, there appears to be a hosepipe running from the ordinary hot water tap straight into his 'solar' heated tank. But Jason is defiant when questioned further: 'I'm filling that tank with cold water,' he explains. When told that the hot water tap also seems to be on he dismissed the implication: 'Was it? That must have been an accident. That solar tank was not heated with hot water,' he insists, slightly shiftily, 'Categorically not … I won't be drawn on it… it wasn't.'
