Darren walks

Watch Video: One volunteer has seen enough >

News: darren wants to leaveFor one of the group, the third day was the end of their dump experience. Following the trip to the landfill, which had left him distinctly unimpressed, Darren decided it was time for him to leave.

Life on the dump was boring him. Compared to his usual busy life looking after his joinery business, his eight dogs and maintaining his four cars, there wasn't enough here to keep him interested. In an interview, Darren explained: 'This isn't me. I feel I've got so much thinking time I've just bored myself. So rather than walk around grumpy I think it's time I go for myself.'

He continued, 'I just don't feel that doing this is gonna change my views and change a lot of people's views out there. For those reasons only I don't see why I should put myself through another three weeks of being unstimulated and not feeling that jolly and thinking 'Oh, I'm here again.'

At home, Darren would only wear his underwear once before throwing it away. It seems nothing he experienced on the dump persuaded him to change his ways: 'I've been living my life here exactly as I would back home and after seeing what I've seen I'm gonna go back and wear my pants and socks once every day and only use them the once. It's not gonna change anything like that. The only thing I will do is make more of an effort to send them to third world countries… I can't see me being any different – I am not going to change my ways.'

So Darren packed up his bags, the group gathered to say goodbye and then he was gone.

News: darren walksWill anyone else leave?

It wasn't a great shock to the rest that Darren decided to go, as he had made it clear he wasn't enjoying the challenge. After he left, the group discussed whether he should have gone or not. Jason felt that he should have stayed and seen it through.

Lawrence agreed and was disappointed that Darren hadn't embraced the challenge: 'I did find it quite unusual that he didn't learn anything from the last three days. It would have been nice to have him stay a few more days and take a different role and see if he could learn something from this experience rather than walk away and say 'no I am not going to change what I throw away, I am not going to change'. I thought that was quite shocking really.'

Sylvia was sad to see him go: 'It's a bit of a shame that he's leaving because he's a really lovely guy. Very funny and very light-hearted and I think he would have been wicked to have around for the next three weeks.' But she was determined to be positive, and her and Jarvis both hoped that Darren's departure would refocus the group and make them all the more determined to rise to the challenge.

But with one of the most practically skilled people in the group gone might they really struggle without him?
