Question 13
As climate change progresses, what measures do you think should be introduced to force people to act greener?
Steve Jones: I don’t really like the idea of forcing people to do anything but we all have to get ready for some very significant changes. Pricing, legislation, raising standards are all strategies I favour. I am really concerned that energy prices will go through the roof at some point, due to rapidly rising global demand and a peaking of world oil supply. This is going to make everything a lot more expensive. What is needed is a joined-up strategy to push forward both energy efficiency and local food production, with both sticks and carrots.
I favour measures that inform and empower people to take more responsibility for their own lives. Many towns have begun a Transition Town process, to work out their own priorities and survival strategies when oil becomes too expensive.
Question 14
On your blog, you suggest getting an allotment – but just how do you get one?
Steve Jones: Contact your local town or parish council, there is an officer who is responsible for allotments. They have become very popular again and a lot of places have waiting lists. I think we should all be pressuring our councils to provide much more allotment space.
