YASMIN

Yasmin

First transmitted in January 2005

A compelling and topical film from the writer of The Full Monty that questions what it means to be Asian, Muslim and British in the 21st century.

The drama unfolds from the viewpoint of Yasmin - a confident and Westernised woman working in Britain while simultaneously trying to live within her own traditional culture.

Yasmin
Having previously rebelled against her Pakistani customs as a teenager, Yasmin agrees to marry a cousin ‘from home’ to please her widowed father. Things begin badly, however, as the cousin - a Pakistani goat herder - arrives and meets his outspoken bride. Yasmin’s confidence begins to evaporate after the events of 9/11, when she becomes increasingly ostracised at work. Following a total crisis of identity, the internment of Yasmin’s husband triggers a new determination and a sense of purpose. She fights vigorously for his release from a holding centre and through her campaign she is forced to re-evaluate not only her relationships, but her faith and her culture too.

Yasmin
Written with close co-operation from the Muslim community in the North of England, this is an emotionally resonant story that reflects that community’s experiences. Set in a northern mill town against a backdrop of poverty, high unemployment and racism, Yasmin deals with the universal themes of transgression, guilt and the search for identity.
