Wife Swap
Karen's household philosophy

Karen
This house is run like a military camp and the officer in charge is definitely my husband Brian. There are set rules, and Brian makes sure that everyone knows what they are. As long as everything runs according to his rules, then we all have an easy life.

For instance, I fix Brian’s drinks - the way he likes them. I hoover - the way he wants it done. I obey his rules, and the kids do as well. The older three aren’t his, they’re mine, but Brian is in total command. They know they can’t run in the house, they can’t eat anywhere except the kitchen, and no-one can stand on his beloved rug in the living room. None of them would ever argue back because they would never win against him.

Brian can inspect the kids’ rooms at any time, and he’ll want to see the DVDs in alphabetical order on the shelf, or he’ll want to see every single one of their computer games. And if it’s not up to standard, they’re in trouble. Punishment can include doing jumping jacks or even holding the squat position for him! They’re like his soldiers - in fact, we all are.

Brian rarely does any housework or childcare, I’ve got used to doing all of that myself. But I think it’s sad that we never do anything as a family. I wish he’d be a proper dad to them instead of just the discipliner.

I’ve given up arguing, I just tune him out, because he goes on and on. He thinks I’m stupid anyway. So I guess I accept the way our lives are - it’s not the way I want it, but it’s the way it is.
