Be on Wife Swap
Michelle

Q: What were you hoping for when you agreed to do Wife Swap?

A: I wanted to see what it was like to live with a real husband, as Barry is such a difficult man.

Q: How hard did you find doing the swap?

A: My normal routine being so hard, I found the swap quite easy. The only hard thing was adjusting to doing nothing. I felt like an invalid. I needed to do something. It was weird asking a man to do the washing up. I mean it's natural for a women to do that.

Q: What bits of the swap did you enjoy?

A: The best bit was meeting Barry in the car. He'd never said 'I love you' in 15 years. It was a great feeling when he said that, especially as he said it on national TV. I knew he really meant it. Also, it was nice having a bath run for me and it was nice to have a girl to look after. She felt like a sister and, being an only child, that was a great feeling.

Q: Do you think you learnt anything from doing the swap?

A: Definitely … I learnt that no other woman could live with Barry. Also, I learnt that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I wouldn't swap Barry for the world. You could have all the money and the best job in the world, but it is far better to have a loving relationship.

Q: Have you seen the programme? Did you think it was fair?

A: Yeah, I thought it was really good how it was put together. They'd got all the best bits. Everyone who's seen it likes it, so the programme makers must have done a good job.

Q: Have you changed the way you do things as a result of doing the swap?

A: I take a little bit more time for myself now.

Q: Has it made you appreciate your spouse more?

A: You must be joking. How could I appreciate Barry any more? I haven't got any time in my 24 hours to appreciate him any more.

Q: Would you do it again?

A: I'd do it again, but I'd need to swap with someone with a bit more character. Pete was too nice. There was no arguments, no fireworks and a relationship needs that. I'd liked Barry to have swapped with Dee [from the first programme]. He would have gone absolutely mental. And I think living with her daughters would have bought out my character.

Q: If your friends were thinking of doing it, what would you advise them?

A: Go for it. It's fantastic. It's a great experience. Don't let the swap change you. Just be yourself and see where that takes you.

Q: What were you hoping for when you agreed to do Wife Swap?

A: I thought it would be interesting to see how other people live. I didn't know anything about documentary making, and I thought I'd like to find out more about that. I was hoping that I would be able to use the experience I gained in my drama workshop.

Q: How hard did you find doing the swap?

A: I found it extremely hard. I found it hard being away from my family. I found it hard getting up early. I found it hard Barry constantly going on … yacking … yacking … yacking.

One day Barry got up at 5 to go for a walk with his dog and to buy a Racing Post. It started raining. He phoned me up so that I could come and collect him.

Q: What bits of the swap did you enjoy?

A: It was delightful to meet Stephen … it was nice to experience what it was like to have a son. I enjoyed meeting Michelle's mum.

Q: Do you think you learnt anything from doing the swap?

A: I realized that we don't all live the same. The majority of my friends have a similar life to me. Barry and Michelle live a totally different life.

The biggest difference was that Barry expected me to do everything. I do the majority of stuff round our house, but when I do it Pete says "thanks, Carol". That makes all the difference.

Q: Have you seen the programme? Did you think it was fair?

A: Fairly accurate. I don't think it showed how hard I work. The programme stressed Michelle works 60 hours a week, but I do at least that, plus I do most of the household chores.

Q: Have you changed the way you do things as a result of doing the swap?

A: No, I don't think I have changed. It's just reinforced that the way I live is right for me.

Q: Has it made you appreciate your spouse more?

A: No, I always knew that Pete was brilliant. He's really fair to me.

Q: Would you do it again?

A: No, no, no, no.

Q: If your friends were thinking of doing it, what would you advise them?

A: People have already approached me asking how they can get on the programme. I tell them they must be crazy.

It's really made me aware of what goes into making a documentary. Doing something like Big Brother, when you can't escape, must be mental.
