VEE-TV goes green.
VEE-TV investigate the effects of global warming and climate change on the world and asks ‘is it too late to make a difference?’
Roving reporter Matty Gurney was set his most challenging mission so far when he attempts to live a green lifestyle on a houseboat like dedicated eco-activist Ronie.
Eco-activist Ronie lives her life sticking as close as she can to her principles of saving energy and not damaging the environment. Matt finds some of her lifestyle choices weird and hard to live by.
For instance, Ronie would rather buy vegetables that spoil quickly than supermarket produce which may have travelled a long way to reach the shelves and been treated with a cocktail of chemicals and pesticides.
Ronie teaches Matty how to cook food on a hay-box, a method of cooking which is slow but stops the food from losing heat and therefore saves energy.
She also shows Matty, a landfill site which gives off dangerous methane gas from all the rubbish buried there. She points out that Britain could run out of space for such sites and that recycling is the only way to limit the reliance on such eyesores.
’We must take action now’.
Executive director of Friends of the Earth Tony Juniper has a stark warning about the effects of climate change. Speaking to VEE-TV he said: ”The changes to the earth’s atmosphere are going to affect everything. The global warming caused by the build-up of carbon dioxide in particular will lead to changes in ecosystems and mass extinctions of species, sea level rises and the loss of some of the world’s biggest cities.
“It’s going to lead to an impact on food production, people migrating because of starvation and it will lead to water shortages to name a few things that could happen if we don’t take action now.”
But Rebecca met Julian Morris, a professor and author of Global Warming: Apocalypse or Hot Air who claims the dire consequences many people predict will be the result of global warming are over-rated.
He told her: ”There are very large environmental organisations who do some good work in some areas but are keen to be in the public eye and have often exaggerated concerns in order to get into the public eye and encourage us to give them money.
“The question is should we be concerned about something that might happen in two or three thousand years or should we be concerned about things that are happening today. I believe we should be more concerned about things happening today.”
What do you think? Do you think global warming is a real threat? If so, what do you do to help the environment? Tell us what you think by visiting our forum,
Matty wasn’t sure that he could become as committed as Ronie is to saving the environment. But he did admit that he hopes to carry out some of her ideas and tell his friends and family about them.
Here are five simple tips that Matt learnt:
1. Don’t fill the kettle right up – just use as much water as you need.
2. Don’t leave electrical equipment on stand-by. Switch them off if you’re not using them.
3. Don’t put the heating on full and wear a t-shirt. Turn the heating down and put on a jumper.
4. Use a steamer for cooking – that way, you’ll use one hob instead of two or three.
5. Recycle as much as you can. Always check the label. And re-use plastic carrier bags.
