This week VEE-TV met talented twins of fashion, Hermi and
Herodina Berhane.
Herodina is a fashion illustrator and Hermi a designer. The twins are currently
taking a year out from the London College of Fashion, and VEE-TV follows them
as they take advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime – work experience
with Michiko Koshino during London Fashion Week. Their ultimate aim is to set
up their own designer label.
Hermi and Herodina talked to Melissa Mostyn, a former VEE-TV researcher and
fashion journalist, about what the fashion world is really like. 'The best thing
about working in the fashion industry is being a part of the most creative,
inspirational, colourful and enjoyable environment in the world,' says Melissa.
'You can't help but be inspired by it. The worst thing is leading a double life
– it means going to glitzy parties then coming home to baked beans on
toast!'
So what is Melissa's advice for budding Coco Chanels? 'You should work alongside
a designer and learn all you can from them for a minimum of two or three years.
It's a fact that over 80% of new fashion businesses fold within two years. You
have to be prepared to work very hard and for long hours. It'll take over your
whole life, which might mean losing out on the Deaf community, so be prepared
for that!'
