Sign Idol was a one-off signed song competition in Perth. And VEE-TV just happened to have someone over there …

Hello from Kings Park, where you can see the whole of Perth – all the modern skyscrapers, the Swan River, and over there, the beaches. Over 1.3 million people live here! Pretty amazing. It was such an honour to be asked to appear as one of three celebrity judges for Sign Idol event. The organisers are big fans of VEE-TV! It was an experience being a judge as there were no subtitles. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the beauty of songs being performed in Auslan. The Deaf community in Australia are at a disadvantage because they don't have access to subtitled music programmes as we do in the UK. But the Australian performers were really raunchy and they were all pretty wasted at the end of the night.

The Best Duet category was won by Kirsten Loughton and Alex Shaw signing 'Barbie Girl' by Aqua; Best Hearing Solo by Paula Norman signing 'Fever' by Elvis; Best Deaf Solo by Alex Shaw signing 'Mamma Mia' by ABBA.

A new Deaf Idol is starting up in the UK soon – we'll have the details on the website as soon as we get them.
