VEE-EVENTS: Surf Relief

This week Vee-TV hits the beach! But it's no holiday, it's for an extremely good cause. Our intrepid reporters went down to Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, to support a fantastic event called Tsunami Surf Relief UK. Surfers came from all over the country to take part and Vee-TV was there to find out more.

The circle of love

The circle of love

Since the tsunami devastated large areas of Asia on 26 December last year, many thousands of people have desperately needed support. They've suffered horrific trauma and many have nothing left and no means of rebuilding their lives. Tsunami Surf Relief UK (TSRUK) was set up by a group of surfers that have visited Asia to surf and who now want to help those in need.

Dave Reed of the British Surfing Association says, 'Many British surfers have spent time in Asia and know the areas and often the local families affected by this terrible disaster. They desperately want to show their support and give something back to those communities and TSRUK will provide a focus for that. Our aim is to support long-term projects, using our local contacts and aid organisations on the ground to identify and deliver relief to specific communities.'

On 9 April, on Fistral Beach, Surf Relief began with a tribute to all those who died in the tsunami disaster – 20 surfers formed a ‘circle of love' in the water. They included Dave Manley, Chair of TSRUK; Phil Williams, head of Christian Surfers; and British Professional Surf Association champion Alan Stokes. Everyone, including the many people watching from the beach, observed a minute's silence in memory of those who died.

Vee-TV caught up with some deaf surfers taking part in the Surf Relief events. You find out more about the boys and watch them surfing on the day at Deaf surfer boys.

Surf instructor Becky Price from the Big Blue Surf School in Bude, Cornwall, put Michelle Roach, Lydia Docker and Karen Newby through their paces, hoping to get them all seaworthy. Becky specializes in teaching deaf people the art of surfing. If you fancy trying your hand at surfing, you could start by reading ten top tips from the Big Blue Surf School.

Surf Relief turned out to be fantastically successful day – raising an amazing £10,000! You can see some pictures of the day, including the girls' surf lessons, in our gallery.
