Charlie Swinbourne (Chuck, Chucky, Chas, Swinny, CHJ or
'Mr', the name of the column I used to write at university
Job
with VEE-TV: Researcher/dogsbody
Star sign:
Virgo. Don't believe in star signs at all, and yet I always read my horoscope!
Marital status:
That's private! OK, I'm single and looking … (too much info?).
School attended:
Chipping Norton School (in the middle of the idyllic Oxfordshire countryside,
a million miles from London's busy city streets, cough cough!)
Life motto: 'Life's short. Live it!'
Favourite films:
Ummm ... got a few. The Godfather (parts 1 and 2), Amelie,
Ikiru, Koyaanisqatsi, Taxi Driver …
Which single object could you not live
without?
My little black book (in which most of the names of the production staff
reside!) … No, really, it's an ideas book. I reckon if I lost it,
it would be like Bob Monkhouse losing his joke books a few years back
… or maybe not!
Who would you choose to star in your
life story?
I'm a big Al Pacino fan, but he'd be miscast if he played me. Ricky Gervais?
Only kidding. How about Brad Pitt? He might have to put on a few pounds
first though!
If E.T. knocked on your door,
holding up a peace sign, and asked to use your phone, what would you do?
I'd try and teach him to use more than just his glowing index finger as
a form of extra-terrestrial sign language. Then I'd introduce him to the
vagaries of typetalk. As a sociological experiment.
What is the best thing about VEE-TV
for you?
It's not only for deaf people, but deaf people of my age group –
and it's funky, energetic, a whole ball of fun!
If you could make a film about anything
for VEE-TV, what would it be?
I've had an idea in my little black book for some time about a suicidal
guy who tries to break out of his monotonous factory-worker life. That's
probably not suitable for transmission at 8.30 on a Sunday morning. It
would probably last a bit too long, too.
What is your long-term aim?
There are a lot of things I'm interested in: film, photography, writing.
I'd love to make my own movie, curate my own photography exhibition and
get a book published. But I'd probably need more than one life to be able
to achieve all those things.
