VEE-STARS:
Dom Joly
Comedian Dom Joly first made his name with Trigger
Happy TV, in which lucky members of the public were filmed reacting
to a wide variety of outrageous and often surreal stunts.

Dom Joly with interpreter Sarah Slater
Dom is originally from
Lebanon, but he lives in Notting Hill. Previous day-jobs have included
being a producer for ITN and a diplomat for the European Commission in
Prague. This, as far as we can tell, is true.
Dom's autobiography Look at Me, Look at Me! is described as a
'celebrity auto-lie-ography' – only about half of it is true. Our
hero, 'a man with the ego of Napoleon but the talent of Darren Day', tells
how he murdered his Armenian nanny before his second birthday, how as
a student he inadvertently gave Kurt Cobain the inspiration for 'Smells
like Teen Spirit', and how, as a producer for ITN, he mistook John Major
for a lizard and was raped by a TV weatherman.
Frightening Eskimos
Dom talked to VEE-TV about his recent World Shut Your Mouth,
which has just been released on DVD.
'The whole idea for World Shut Your Mouth came from one idea
that I put on my ideas board at home. It just said, "Frighten an
Eskimo." I really liked the idea, but I wasn't sure how I'd do it.
But when we came up with the idea of going round the world and doing stunts,
we went to Newfoundland, and I found an Eskimo or an Inuit sitting in
the middle of an ice lake, fishing. And I crept up behind him with some
cymbals and I made him jump. And then ran off. Luckily he wasn't a deaf
Eskimo, otherwise it would have been a complete waste of time. But he
really jumped. I like that – he has 50 words for "snow"
but not a word for "idiot".'
Dom isn't planning another series of World Shut Your Mouth, but
he is planning a film. 'I have to say it very carefully: it's called Cunning
Stunts,' he explains. 'I've taken six of the characters and we're
going to do a hidden-camera film, going more into their characters and
doing "a day in the life". It's still at an early stage but
I'm quite excited by it.'
