Paul Lynch's favourite sign is 'safe'
or 'peace'. ![]() Signing off: Paul Lynch signs 'safe' or 'peace' 'When I was 11, I got very involved in the black community
through the YMCA,' says Paul, 40, from Wolverhampton. 'I played football
and other sports. The others had strong Jamaican accents and I was a BSL
user. In those days, when I met deaf people, I would say "Give me
five!", but language has changed since then. I now use "safe",
which means "peace". When I go into a pub to meet my deaf friends,
I greet them, catch up with conversation, and then, at the end of the
evening, I sign "safe" to everyone.'
