Nigel
Nigel is a caretaker
at the college. Deaf and in his late 30s, he loves hanging out with the
students. Sadly, they don't always feel the same he tends to get
in the way and misunderstand situations. But deep down, all the students
have a soft spot for him even though he is the butt of many of their jokes.
Nigel is increasingly besotted with Maya,
whom he sees in his fantasies as Xena, Warrior Princess.
Nigel is played by
Ilan Dwek, who made his debut at the Deaf Forum Theatre Project with London
Bubble Theatre in 1992. He initially specialised in Theatre of the Oppressed
work, with such companies as Graeae Theatre, and has since appeared in
several television and theatre productions. His television credits include
Milo in BAFTA-award-winning Dream On (Channel 4), Where the
Heart Is (Anglia TV), The Unknown Soldier (Carlton TV), and
several episodes in BBC's From The Edge and See Hear. On
stage, he has appeared as Paloochi in Spirit of a Clown (Little
Unicorn), Ilya in Taisha and the Time-Traveller (Face Front, which
he also directed), Barry in A Minute of Silence (Mettle Productions)
and in What the Butler Saw and Fall of House of Usher (both
Graeae).
