Nicky is on the run from the police, having trashed the centre where he is doing community service, but he is caught and arrested. Kelly finds her mother has taken up with an old boyfriend, Alan, whom she really dislikes. Troy, left to mind his uncle Errol’s record shop, is faced with aggression from AJ and two other local lads who are angered when he doesn’t respond to them, not realising he’s deaf. Errol chases them away.

Meanwhile, in college, Adam is trying to make a film. Nigel the caretaker is fascinated and can’t help getting in his way. He shows Adam his poster of Xena the Warrior Princess and tells him how he idolises both Xena and Maya, a student at the college.

In the pub, Mel is dumped by her hearing lover, a married man. He tells her she needs to be with someone more like herself – that is, deaf. Mel is devastated. Nicky comes into college and tells his friends about his recent arrest. Maya tries to convince him to change his ways.

Troy and Maya have spotted that Adam fancies Kelly and tease him about it. Adam notices her disapproval of junk food and decides to try to impress her by convincing her he's a health fanatic.
