Samuel Dore: bursteardrum

Samuel Dore, a 23-year-old graphic designer from Bristol, has a dependency problem. 'Film has taken over my life,' he says. 'I live and breathe films so much it has become a drug, and I often need my regular fix of visits to the cinema to find the best and most original films. To be honest, no space is big enough to contain my enthusiasm for films.'

To sum up, then, Sam likes films a lot. But how did he get the habit? And how did he start thinking about making them?

'My love for films stemmed from Steven Spielberg films and tacky sci-fi B-movies from the 1950s. Having built a career from art that contributed to my love for the visual aspects of films, I grew to love films even more – the whole process of production to the finished film. As well as discovering the best in script writing, originality, direction and camera work, I have written a bunch of fictional scripts based mostly on personal experience, controversial topics and ideas that come from everyday life.

'bursteardrum is a topic close to my heart because I am an avid clubber in Bristol’s excellent underground hard house scene, I knew of other deaf clubbers loving those clubs but there had been little impact on the awareness of the hearing world. I wanted to expose this aspect and show the hearing world that deaf people have a love for music. I hope I have broken the cliché of social-club gatherings and created a whole new culture of deaf clubbers, previously lying dormant for years.'

So what's next on the agenda?

'I would love to tackle fictional films or take part in production of TV/film productions, having a healthy interest in directors. I believe I have strong creativity and enthusiasm for the directional aspect of film/TV production.'
