The story so far

RUSH explores the lives of a group of six friends – Kelly, Adam, Troy, Nicky, Mel and Maya – who met while they were students.

Adam and Maya, who are both the sort of people that others depend on, bind the group together. Adam is very protective towards – and attracted to – Kelly.

Kelly was traumatised as a result of abuse by her mother's former boyfriend. But in the second series she summoned up the courage to press charges against her abuser and the man was convicted.

In the third series, Adam was looking after his sister's daughter, Kara, while his sister was in hospital following a drug overdose. Adam was horrified when his sister confessed that Kara's father was in fact Adam's close friend and flatmate Troy.

Troy had been something of a womaniser in the past. However, the realisation that he was a father had a big effect on him, and he seemed ready to accept his responsibility and apply for the custody of his daughter.

Nicky, the bad boy of the group, ended up in prison at the end of the second series. On release, he was soon in trouble again, selling fake drugs to some very unsatisfied customers.

Like Nicky, Mel is partially deaf and something of an outsider, and there's a rapport between these two. Mel has a history of abusive relationships with hearing men, and towards the end of the third series, Casey, the owner of a lapdancing club in which she was working, forced her to have sex with him. Mel took her revenge by helping Nicky to steal money from the safe at Casey's club.

Troy's hearing uncle Errol, who runs a nightclub, was at the centre of even more dramatic events in the third series. Errol's former girlfriend, Marcia, had been beaten up by her new boyfriend, Clancy. When Clancy appeared at Errol's club and harassed Marcia, Errol attacked him. But Clancy swore revenge, and later returned to the club with a gun.

The series ended in trauma: we found that Kara, Troy's child and Adam's niece, had been killed by a stray bullet when Clancy tried to shoot Errol. At Kara's funeral, there was a terrible sense of loss, but also a sense of the enduring bond between the friends …
